You would be hard pressed to find a restaurant with an origin story as unique as Loka’s. Co-owner Chef Dave Mottershall hails from Port Elgin Ontario, got his start cooking in Banff, and came to prominence on Prince Edward Island with an award winning farm and sea to table bistro. He announced his arrival to Toronto with a successful pop up and then decided to break all the rules and open Loka - Kickstarter-style - with his partner Ayngelina Brogan, a food and travel writer. On the strength of his culinary reputation and their global following of like-minded foodies, Chef Dave and Ayngelina opened Loka - the city’s first crowdfunded restaurant.
Loka serves innovative Canadian cuisine creating with the best of what’s local and in-season. The creativity and taste that drives the menu and wine list is reminiscent of fine dining. The space is warm and laid back. Loka has an excellent charcuterie program and has a zero waste policy. Lokas was named the Best New Restaurant in 2015 by NOW Magazine and Top 20 Best New Restaurant by Toronto Life. A gift certificate for their The “Taste the Whole Menu” option ($100, not including alcohol, taxes or gratuity) would make a wonderful gift for avant-garde foodie on your list this year.
From Ontario, to the West Coast, East Coast and back again. Local ingredients and environmentally conscious. Opened by everyone pitching in and working together. How Canadian is that?
