Chew Street Foodie Gift Guide - McMichael Collection Wines

Looking for the perfect gift for the foodie or home chef on your gift list?  Chew Street has got you covered!  We've hand picked the perfect gifts for food and wine lovers and will be sharing them with you in this Foodie Gift Guide Series.  For a gift that gives back treat someone you love to one of our Food and Wine Lovers gift packs, a collaboration with Swell Made Co. that benefits the Yonge Street Mission.

Aren't they stunning? This collection of wine was the first pick for this year's Foodie Gift Guide.  I first spotted these beauties way back in June at an event for the Ontario Wine Awards.  I loved, loved, loved the packaging - each bottle bearing a depection of pristine, colourful, Canadian landscapes painted by a member of the Group of Seven from the McMichael Canadian Art Collection. Christmas this year coincides with the 50th anniversary of the McMichael Collection, and I really love this tribute to Canadian art and wine.

These wines are the product of Diamond Estates, a winery in Niagara-on-the-Lake.  There are 4 bottles of Chardonnay and 3 bottles of Cabernet Merlot.  The Chardonnay is a 2014 VQA, and won Gold in the Unoaked Chardonnay category at this year's Ontario Wine Awards.  It is pale yellow in colour with notes of peach, pear, and citrus.  Try it over the holidays with your oyster bar, smoked salmon or baked brie appetizer.  The Cabernet Merlot is also a 2014 VQA, fermented on the skins for 14 days, then aged in French and American oak barrels for 10 months.  I've been making jerk lamb the last few Christmases and I plan on washing it down this year with this red.

You can purchase a McMicheal Collection gift box online - it comes beautifully packaged with one Chardonnay, one Cabernet Merlot and a 4 pack of cards from with images from the Group of Seven ($34.95).  I'd rather gift all 7 - I think it would make an amazing gift.  They are sold for $14.95 each (the Cabernet is currently on sale for $13.95) at Diamond Estates online store or at the LCBO.
