Sisterfriends - What to Eat, Drink & Do on Galentine's Day

That special day in February that focuses on love is fast approaching! No, I’m not talking about Valentine’s Day. Although we're suckers for a day dedicated to romance, we believe in going all out for Galentine's Day. Celebrated on February 13th, I can’t think of a better day to remind your sisters, friends, cousins and all the other awesome women in your life that your world would be a less happy place without them.

Not familiar with the tradition? Let's get you up to speed:

Galentine's Day is:

A celebration of female friendship - - The relationships that are the cornerstone of our child, teen and adult lives; the relationships that exist before, during, and after our romantic relationships; those friendships that are immune to jealousy but thrive instead on loyalty, kind criticism, and mutual support.

Galentine's Day is not:

A day where you feel societal pressure to commiserate with your single friends about not having a partner.

Celebrating your first Galentine’s Day this year? Not sure where to start? We’ve got you covered.  We’ve partnered with Cupcake Vineyards to bring you the definitive Guide to Galentines Day.

California's Cupcake Vineyards  is led by winemaker, Jessica Tomei, a veteran of the wine industry.  In discussions about female leadership and breaking glass ceilings, converstations often focus on traditional corporate settings.  Yet women in the food, wine and agricultural industries have been fighting the same battle.   In a state that produces 90% of America's wine, with only 10% of their lead winemakers being female, Jessica's leadership at Cupcake Vineyards is significant.

Get your Galentine's Day festitivies off to a celebratory start with a wine and wine cocktail. We've picked two wines from Cupcake's selection to toast the ladies you love.

This is an easy drinking fruit forward wine with flavours of  dark cherry and cassis that go perfectly with chocolate and desserts.

Cupcake's Black Forest Decadent Red isn't actually a cake flavoured wine.  It's a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Zinfandel, Petite Verdot and Petite Sirah.  Our wine wine cocktail is unfussy, not too sweet, and can be put together quickly when your favourite ladies pop by.

Our  Dulce de Leche Pudding is like a wolf in sheep's clothing.  It has many components  but you don't have to make the most labour intensive ones - the dulce de leche and macaron and meringue toppings can be bought prepared in stores to cut down the cooking time.  I love Bobette and Belle for macarons and meringue cookies and you can find dulce de leche in grocery stores.  This creamy pudding combines the tastes of cocoa, caramel and the cruch of walnuts and pairs well with our recommened wine or wine cocktail.

Before or after you and your girlfriends indulge in your wine and dessert make some memories by doing some of our favourite Galentine's Day activities.

Watch - Now more than ever, women are being celebrated on the big and small screens.  The Oscar-Nominated Hidden Figures is 'empowerment cinema' that's inspiring women and girls everywhere.

Gift - We love Swell Made Co.'s minimal and modern design.  Owned by designer and entrepreneur Lesley Pocklington, her pieces - from wall art to keychains - can put a positive spin on anyone's day.  Treat your friends to her Queen art print, or keytag.

Give - Galentine's Day and the friendships that inspire it are reminders to pay it forward to women that don't have access to the same opportunities we do.  Consider giving to your community's women's shelter.  Here's a list of women's shelters in Canada and the USA.   Globally, Plan International and the YWCA have  done amazing work to raise awareness of gender inequality and access to education for girls and refugees.
